Crohn’s Cure

Is there really a cure for Crohn’s disease?  Unfortunately, if you search the internet or are prone to believing old wives’ tales or Great Aunt Sally’s anecdotes, you may think you have found a magical Crohn’s cure.  In reality, Crohn’s  is a chronic disease, which may go in to remission for periods of time, that can never be cured.

Are there some people with Crohn’s who have a mild case for most of their lives and who may be in better shape than a friend with irritable bowel syndrome?  Yes, of course, anything is possible.  Most sufferers usually have periods of intense symptoms and Crohns complications, while at other times have very mild Crohns symptoms or even are lucky enough to lapse in to remission – even for years.

Crohn’s treatment can include a vast regimen of medications in an attempt to control the disease.  Matching the myriad of medicines with correct dosages for each individual makes fighting this disease so difficult.  A Crohns diet limiting certain foods has also been known to help with Crohn’s pain.  Unfortunately, this option, like medication, is based on trial and error with most of the work to be done by the patient to isolate which group of foods aggravate the disease, and which, if any, actually help alleviate Crohns symptoms.  A diary kept by the patient for both observations of effects of the drugs, including side effects, and listing which foods affect the Crohn’s can be extremely helpful.

Crohns surgery is last resort for treatment of Crohn’s in an attempt to find a “cure” or in reality send the disease into remission.  The problem is because there is no cure, even surgery is just a temporary solution , if it works at all.  After surgery, the patient is left with less intestines for the body to utilize, and ultimately, must deal with the recurrence of their Crohn’s.  With less intestines, this could lead to more Crohns complications, which in turn could result in more surgery!
